English Language Learners ELL

The goal of the program for English language learners is to provide instruction so that students can become fully proficient in English and meet the same challenging state academic content and student achievement standards as all other children are expected to meet.

The main ELL program model used at elementary, middle and high school levels is ESL or English as a Second Language.

ELL teachers emphasize teaching English while also supporting the main objectives of the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) in math, science, social studies/history and language arts. ·      Instruction includes techniques, methods, and tailored curriculum designed to develop an English Learner’s skills in reading, speaking, listening, and writing across content areas. ELL teachers may also use content-based instruction where children learn the academic content necessary to meet passing requirements in grade-level classes in order to be promoted to the next grade level, to pass Virginia's mandated standardized tests in which are in English, and to graduate from a Virginia high school. Thus, students learn grade-level content while they develop their English skills.
If you are an ELL parent or teacher and have any questions or concerns contact Instructional Services/Title III Coordinator, Dr. Bess Worley at 693-7498.

WIDA ACCESS TESTING

English Language Proficiency (ELP) testing will begin in January. Parents receive letters the week before Winter break with more information. However, as with all testing, please be sure that your students get plenty of sleep and a good breakfast on test days!
