Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback

Setting objectives and providing feedback give students directions and help them think about their own learning.  Teachers need to define concrete, measurable objectives and encourage students to personalize them.  Feedback should be timely and refer to specific levels of performance.

Marzano's recommendations for classroom practice include:

  • setting objectives that are not too specific

  • personalizing objectives

  • communicating objectives

  • negotiating contracts

  • using criterion-referenced feedback and explanations

  • using feedback from assessments

  • engaging students in peer feedback

  • asking students to self-assess
