Incorporating Cooperative Learning Effectively

When students are giving opportunities to interact with each other in a variety of ways their learning is enhanced.  Cooperative learning involves more than just placing students in groups.  They must learn and master skills for working in groups.

Marzano's recommendations for classroom practice include:

  • using elements of cooperative learning

    • positive interdependence

    • face-to-face promotive interaction

    • individual and group accountability

    • interpersonal and small group skills

    • group processing

  • varying grouping criteria
  • managing group size (3-5 are recommentded)
