Increasing Value in Homework and Practice

Homework and practice give students opportunities to practice, review and apply knowledge.  Research referenced in Marzano's book indicates that students need to practice a skill 24 times to reach 80% competency.

Marzano's recommendations for classroom practice include:

  • establishing and communicating a homework policy

  • clarifying the purpose of homework

  • asking students to use homework assignment sheets

  • commenting on homework

  • determining which skills are worth practicing

  • scheduling massed and distributed practice
