Admission of Resident Students

Admission of Resident Students

Unless otherwise prohibited by the policies, rules, and regulations of the School Board, the public schools in Gloucester County will be free to each person of school age who:

  • Has reached his fifth birthday on or before September 30 of the school year and who has not reached twenty years of age on or before August 1 of the school year.

  • Resides with a natural parent or legal adoptive parent living in Gloucester County

  • Resides with a person in loco parentis living in Gloucester County, and/or

  • Resides with a person who is living in Gloucester County who is caring for the student and is the court-appointed guardian.

Any student, as defined in the Code of Virginia, who has reached his/her eighteenth birthday and who resides in Gloucester County may be admitted to the Gloucester County Public Schools whether or not he/she has a parent or guardian living in Gloucester County.

State law permits local school boards to adopt regulations for discretionary admission of certain students who do not meet the age and residency requirements to be entitled to free public education.
